The Web: Tales Told Live

In April, the NSW Storytellers held their bi-monthly event The Web: Tales Told Live at the Friend in Hand pub, Glebe. And what a lively afternoon of telling tales it was! As well as the popular open mic, the Web had 3 featured storytellers, Christine Carlton, Sue Alvarez and Lindy Mitchell-Nilsson. Lindy opened the afternoon with her story of rat extermination and guilt in “Out Damn Spot”. Christine told a beautiful personal story about music, story and family traditions. Sue shared the adventures of her walks, from historical walks in London & Tasmania, including a compulsory pub crawl.

The Open Mic was very popular with Stephen Martin telling a ghostly historical yarn, Michael Patterson’s sharing a hilarious tale of teenage crime and Samantha Herbert with a delightful telling of a Mem Fox classic, “Possum Magic”. We were also joined by two Andrews, Andrew Solmssen from the US, who told his journey from the brink of death to an amazing new life and Aussie Andrew who joined us through the Meet Up group to share couple of his poems.

The afternoon came to a close with Christine Carlton telling a terrific “Interrupted Tale”.  If you haven’t heard an interrupted tale, it is where the storyteller invites the audience to pick the character, the time and the place, then someone supplies the teller with a steady stream of outlandish words which the teller incorporates into the story. Christine proved herself once again, to be the master of the Interrupted Tale, not only seamlessly dropping in the words but making a wonderfully entertaining story in the process.
